Acupressure ~ Shiatsu ~ Trigger-Point Massage | Print |  E-mail

Deep rhythmic rocking accompanied by shiatsu trigger-point techniques. Intensely releasing. If you have ever heard of chi or yin and yang, you are familiar with some of the elements that go into these traditional Asian methods of healing. Chi means balanced flow, and these ancient practices allow it to be freed if it has been blocked. Thousands of years of study has revealed a map of energy and pressure points, all of which can be utilized and manipulated to give you better health and happiness.

In acupressure, applying pressure on specific focal points along 14 "meridians" of the body encourages the release of endorphins, the hormones also released through exercise. Acupressure also stimulates increased circulation. There are two ways that acupressure points are manipulated: pressing (reinforcing) and reducing them. Pressing or reinforcing increases energy in areas relating to that point and reducing causes a release from blockage such as tension, pain, or heat.

Shiatsu is similar and performed while lying on a floor mat or massage table or sitting up. Pressure is often applied using the thumbs, though various other parts of the body may be employed, including fingertips, palms, knuckles, elbows, and knees—some therapists even use their feet. Squeezing and stretching exercises are utilized as well.

Trigger point massage, or "myotherapy" addresses the same tight areas of muscle tissue that the above do, while the person receiving massage participates through deep breathing as well as expressing the exact location and intensity of the pain.
